Keyaki

Latin name: Zelkova serrata

Origin: Asia

Characteristics: Heartwood is golden-brown in color and often has a lustrous sheen. Generally available as quarter cut and is a good substitute for American elm. Availability is extremely limited. Keyaki is valued in Japan and used often for furniture, such as tansu, as well in solid form is considered the ideal wood for the creation of taiko drums.

Use: Architectural woodwork and furniture.
