Latin name: Machaerium scleroxylon

Origin: South America-Bolivia

Characteristics: Heartwood is tan-brown to dark violet-brown. Grain is irregular often with dramatic black streaks. Grain pattern can be interlocking and multidirectional creating very desirable “pictures” or “monkey ears”. Not generally suited for quarter grain, but quartered material is gaining in popularity and some stock is available. Small colored worm holes are often found. It is often difficult to pair similar logs and logs are prone to buckling and must be pressed very carefully.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
