Mappa Burl

Latin name: Populus nigra

Origin: Europe

Characteristics: Heartwood is light yellow-brown to brown. The burl occurs as blush to dark brown eyes that are sometimes open and there is generally as much swirl as burl. The wood is from European Poplar trees and the burls often are very big in dimension.  It is relatively soft and as a result slicing can be difficult and open defects “tear out” can occur from torn fiber. Buckling in the veneer is often a concern as well.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
