Redwood

Latin name: Sequoia sempervirens

Origin: United States

Characteristics: Heartwood is light red to brownish-red, frequently in shades of violet and darkens over time. Trees can live to be up to 4,000 years old and average height of 100-year-old tree is approx. 230ft. Redwood is a protected species, making naturally fallen trees or “salvage logs “the only source of veneer. It is generally only available in vertical grain and very few logs are figured. Figured logs have a large scale bold rolling figure. Tends to dry out and become brittle making splicing some logs challenging.

Use: Architectural woodwork, fine furniture and doors.
