Sapele, Figured

Latin name: Entandophragma cylindricum

Origin: Africa

Characteristics: Heartwood varies from light pink to dark red and quickly darkens to a red-brown in time. Quartered material sometimes develops a fine broken figure almost approaching a “bee’s wing”. Rarely does it produce a pure fiddleback and as a result those logs are very expensive. Some logs are produced rotary and have a pommele figure that is generally small in scale and very dramatic. Some logs in rotary form also develop a drape’ figure where the grain changes and swirls in different directions.

Use: Architectural woodwork and fine furniture.
